Happy Fourth, everyone! If you like a little razzle dazzle, this post is for you. Many localities are likely hosting fireworks celebrations worth Instagramming over, but there are also a few historic properties and nonprofits that are getting in on the action. In case you’re still making plans for Friday night, here are some fireworks shows you may be interested in.
Colonial Williamsburg’s Annual Celebration on Duke of Gloucester Street
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is offering free admission to the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg on July 4 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guests can explore the grounds and performances during the day. At 9:30 p.m., a stunning fireworks display will launch over Governor’s Palace. Admission is free, but you need to secure your ticket online before you go. Learn more here.
Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks Benefitting SVFC
We love a pyrotechnic event that benefits firefighters! In its 23rd year, this event supports the local volunteer fire department of Saunders. There is a food truck court and a beer garden, but no outside food or drinks are allowed. Admission is $10 per person, children under 10 are free and there are activities all day. Learn more here.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon Independence Day Celebrations
As you can imagine, the home of George Washington also is an excellent viewing spot for fireworks this year. Mount Vernon is hosting a series of programming on July 4, which includes an appearance from the General himself. This event is actually sold out, but we bet if you get there early, you can park cattycorner to the property on the other side of the Potomac at Riverside Park for just as good views.
Fourth at the Fort – Fireworks over Fort Monroe
As part of its events leading up to our semiquicentennial anniversary, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), is hosting a youth-focused Independence Day celebration at historic Fort Monroe. There are hands-on history activities and youth performances, and the culmination of the event is the largest fireworks display in the state. Learn more here.
