‘Kids, Get in the Car:’ Holiday Events Hosted by or Supporting Virginia’s Nonprofits

Deck the halls (and our communities) with holiday decorations and celebrations galore! It’s the season of giving and fellowship, and there is no shortage of holiday celebrations across Virginia’s nonprofit community.

It’d be impossible for us to encapsulate everything in one post, but we’re pulling out some holiday highlights we found. We also suggest heading over to our events calendar for more holiday events this season.

“Let it Snow” with The Richmond Symphony (Richmond, Virginia)

The Richmond Symphony presents the annual holiday favorite “Let It Snow!” on Nov. 30 with performances at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Celebrate the season with family and friends at the Dominion Energy Center Carpenter Theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. Carols, classics, seasonal favorites and the sparkling vocals of American Idol golden-ticket recipient and Chesterfield-native Carrie Brockwell are on the program. Purchase tickets for the 3 p.m. or 8 p.m. shows.

The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region’s Ring in the Holidays (Fredericksburg, Virginia)

This event is billed as being one that helps usher Fredericksburg into the holiday season, while providing critical operating funds for the organization and its programs. Attendees will raise their glass for a champagne toast and dance the night away. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. Register for the celebration here.

Fiddler on the Roof at Weinstein JCC (Richmond, Virginia)

“Fiddler on the Roof” is the 15th anniversary production at the Weinstein JCC’s Jewish Family Theatre. Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, the heartwarming tale of Tevye the Dairyman and his family’s struggles in a changing Russia is a true musical theatre tradition whose themes continue to be relevant today. The play runs from Dec. 5-15. Editor’s Note: If you’re like us, we were thinking, “Hmmm, Fiddler on the Roof is a holiday story?” There are some connections to be had.

Richmond Ballet and “The Nutcracker”

Is it really the holidays without taking in a performance of “The Nutcracker?” Featuring the nonprofit Richmond Ballet, along with the Richmond Symphony, performances take place at the Dominion Energy Center Dec. 7 – 23. Tickets start at $25. Visit etix.com or call the Richmond Ballet Box Office.

Christmas Illumination at Mount Vernon (Alexandria, Virginia)

If you’re looking for a little Virginia history with your holiday outings, check out the Christmas Illumination at Mount Vernon, Dec. 20-22 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. You’ll hear carolers, explore authentic blacksmith shops and, if you stay late enough, you’ll catch fireworks over the Potomac (we’ll just ignore that modern fireworks weren’t invented for another century after Washington resided there). Tickets here.
