Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K race

Stepping UP to Build Awareness of Down Syndrome Community

The Virginia Down Syndrome Association is growing its footprint.

Founded in 1983 as the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond, VDSA serves families in Central Virginia, including Richmond and Petersburg, and five other regions across the commonwealth. It aims to provide lifelong care and support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Ahead of its 19th annual Step UP for Down Syndrome – its biggest fundraising event – we caught up with Michael Baum, executive director of the Virginia Down Syndrome Association, to learn more about the community celebration on Oct. 11 at Dorey Park and the growth of the organization.

Your annual Step UP fundraiser is right around the corner. What are some of the highlights this year?

Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K & Family Festival is scheduled for Saturday Oct.11 at Dorey Park. A silent auction and raffle round out the day, creating fun for the whole family while raising vital support for VDSA’s mission.

What is the impact of the event?

Our Step UP event builds community awareness and brings people together in support and solidarity with individuals with Down syndrome. As our largest annual fundraiser, the event helps generate vital funding for workforce initiatives, educational programs and family resources, while also showcasing the many opportunities VDSA provides to families across Virginia. Beyond fundraising, the event strengthens partnerships, celebrates inclusion and highlights the incredible potential of individuals with Down syndrome. Our individuals serving as Ambassadors play a key role in engaging the community, showcasing their abilities, sharing personal stories and amplifying our mission.

Your service area continues to grow. Describe VDSA’s reach across the state.

VDSA has experienced substantial growth in recent years, now serving families in Central Virginia, Richmond, Petersburg and five additional regions. Thanks to generous funders, we launched the Community Care in Action program in April, hiring Community Coordinators across the state to expand outreach. This initiative allows VDSA to connect with families through statewide events, virtual programs and in-person support, ensuring individuals with Down syndrome and their families receive the resources and care they need.

Where do you see the organization in five years?

The Virginia Down Syndrome Association was founded in 1983 by families united by their passion for supporting their children. What began as a small, family-led effort has grown into a statewide organization that provides lifelong care and support. From twinkle to wrinkle, we are proud to offer something for everyone at every stage of life.

In five years, VDSA strives to be recognized as the statewide leader in Down syndrome support. We envision a stronger organization with an expanded board that brings diverse skills supported by clear roles, responsibilities and passion for our mission. By reaching more areas, increasing the number of self-advocates and families we serve, and ensuring our resources truly represent the community, we will continue building a sustainable and impactful organization.
