NextUp RVA’s New Locator Tool Makes Youth Programs More Accessible Than Ever

Since 2013, NextUp RVA has built, bridged and mobilized a strong system of out-of-school time (OST) — which refers to activities that take place outside of the regular school day, typically before or after school, during weekends or over school breaks — and expanded-learning resources for Richmond area youth (ages 11-19).

After spending more than ten years working with this network of 140+ youth development organizations and agencies, the Richmond-based nonprofit wanted to compile a comprehensive, online resource that connects area families to free and quality afterschool and summer programs.

Thus, the Youth Program Locator was born.

Available on NextUp RVA’s website, the tool offers an interactive, filterable map of programs offered across the city of Richmond. It covers a wide range of interests — from STEM and the arts to sports and leadership development — and prioritizes vetted programs. NextUp RVA plans to expand listings in the future to include additional free and at-cost programs, including those offering financial assistance.

“Every young person deserves access to safe, engaging opportunities outside of school,” said Dr. Traymanesha Lamy, president and CEO of NextUp RVA. “The Youth Program Locator is a vital step forward in helping families easily connect with programs that match their needs, interests and schedules.”

The locator will highlight summer programs from May through August and school-year programs from August through April and will be updated on a seasonal basis. Registration is required for all listed programs.

“This is about reducing barriers,” Dr. Lamy said. “We want families to easily connect with affordable programs in the community that help youth explore their passions and potential future career paths.”

Another way NextUp helps bring accessible programming to Richmond youth is through its Middle School Alliance, which relies on partnerships with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, the YMCA of Greater Richmond and Richmond Public Schools to coordinate afterschool programs in six middle schools. The City of Richmond also turned to the organization to manage its Positive Youth Development (PYD) initiative which organizes no-cost, OST programs and events across the city where they’re needed most.

Richmond PYD programs are making a measurable difference in young lives, according to a 2024 survey: 96% of youth reported feeling more confident in themselves and discovering their strengths; 94% made new friends; and 86% felt more motivated to do well in school.

These programs, which support more than 800 youth annually, are part of a broader citywide strategy that has contributed to a 64% decrease in youth-involved shootings since 2017.
