If you’re reading this soon after it’s posted, there’s still time to join the Virginia Down Syndrome Association at its annual Dancing with the Local Stars Gala on Thursday, June 12 at the Altria Theater. Tickets are free. The organization is partnering with specialty dancers from Miracles in Motion, a nonprofit dance group that provides specialized dance instruction to individuals with disabilities of all ages. Get in Line (Dancing) to Support HBCUs

KR Scholars, a nonprofit based in Richmond, whose mission is to support underserved students attending or planning to attend Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), is hosting a spirited fundraiser in conjunction with June 19 (though the event is actually the day before).  Get in line – at the buffet and on the dance floor – at the Juneteenth HBCU Scholarship Fundraiser – Line Dancing & Buffet. The scholarship fundraiser takes place on Wednesday, June 18 at Jackie’s Restaurant Southern Style Cooking. The event honors the legacy of Juneteenth and marks KR Scholars’ five-year anniversary as a community-focused nonprofit organization. You can learn more about the event here.

Feeding More in Southwest Virginia

Feeding Southwest Virginia has announced an expansion of its summer meals program, adding new locations across Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Salem to help combat childhood hunger during school breaks. The nonprofit organization expects to serve more than 250,000 meals to approximately 5,000 children this summer, marking a significant increase from last year’s 222,000 meals that were provided to more than 4,000 kids. Learn more about the announcement in this WSLS article.

Does this Cat Nonprofit Have Nine Lives?

Save Them, Spay Them, Love Them based in Virginia Beach is asking for your help. In May, the organization locked its doors for the day, only to get calls just hours later alerting them to a fire that engulfed its building. Medical supplies that were going to be distributed and supplies for fundraising supplies were destroyed. A “Paws-itively Purr-Fect” benefit has been scheduled for June 21. You can learn more about the event and how the organization’s founder is working on moving forward by watching this segment from WAVY.
