There is no shortage of great things happening in Virginia’s nonprofit community. From coffee shops with a purpose to mega millions in charitable giving, keep on reading for this month’s Phil-Ins.
Regenesis Adds Coffee Shop to Its Ministry
The newly opened Market Street Coffee House in Petersburg is not your typical home to lattes, cappuccinos and cups of morning joe. It’s also a training ground for men and women in rehab, folks learning to become baristas as they work to overcome addiction issues. The new café is part of the growing ministry of Regenesis, a nonprofit that not only operates the coffee shop, but also has four group homes, prison ministry, food ministry and two thrift stores. The organization’s Recovery Program is a residential program designed to help those struggling with lifestyles that have led to dysfunctional and destructive behavior. WTVR reported on some of the café’s early success. Want to stop in? You’ll find it at 1111 N. Market Street in Petersburg.
Come to the Cabaret
Wilkommen, bienvenue and welcome to the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance’s 2024/25 season of Legends on Grace, a traditional cabaret series that features performances by some of Virginia’s legendary artists. The series takes place at the Dominion Energy Center – on Grace Street, get it? – and will include performances from four different genres of music. Season subscriptions are available for purchase now with single ticket options opening up on August 1. More ticket info is here.
Foundation Hones Focus on Workforce Development through New Nonprofit
The Claude Moore Foundation, which has awarded more than $100 million in charitable giving over the last 30-plus years, has created a new nonprofit arm focused on supporting workforce development. Claude Moore Opportunities aims to build on the foundation’s work in addressing Virginia’s workforce shortage by building regional and statewide collaborations among educational institutions, healthcare organizations and others to fill employment gaps in critical roles. Loudoun Now has the story.
