Kites were flying and spirits were high as families gathered for a fun-filled day at The Diamond with Forward Foundation.
Founded in 2020, Forward Foundation is a Richmond nonprofit devoted to supporting single-parent families enduring financial crises. The organization aims to provide aid to families that are ineligible for state assistance.
On July 30, the nonprofit gathered to celebrate its third annual “Family Day at The Diamond” event. During the celebration, families cheered on the Flying Squirrels during a game of baseball and enjoyed plates of BBQ until their hearts were content.
Hosted by Gilbane Development Company, the yearly event gives families a chance to spend the day together uninterrupted and get back to what matters most: each other.
“It’s important for our families to have opportunities to just take a break,” Executive Director Andrea Starr explained. “They get to breathe and do something fun with their children without worrying about the cost.”
The event not only provided an opportunity for family bonding, but it also gave parents a chance to connect with families enduring the same battles as them.
“It’s amazing being able to spend time with other families like mine,” said Sierra Ortiz, one of the attendees at the Family Day event. “We always have a shoulder to lean on.”
Over three years, Forward Foundation has provided parents with various tools and opportunities that help lighten the load of single parenthood, such as rent and budget assistance, estate planning and other programs.
Throughout the year, Forward Foundation hosts events similar to “Family Day at The Diamond” in order to foster a space for both parents and children. The nonprofit recently hosted a “Mom’s Night Out,” allowing moms to escape the chaos of everyday life for a few hours.
As the organization looks towards the future, it hopes to continue to provide its usual vital resources to families in need while also expanding its reach across state and national borders.
