Richmond Symphony to Celebrate MLK Weekend with Two Concerts

The Richmond Symphony will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with two special concerts.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, Butcher Brown will collaborate with the Symphony for the January Pops at 8 p.m. at the Dominion Energy Center’s Carpenter Theatre. Locally famous and internationally talented, Brown hears the history of jazz and fuses it with funk, hip-hop, rap, rock and soul. But for this performance, the entire orchestra of the Richmond Symphony will add a special layer to the mix. This concert represents a truly innovative venture that adds a new dimension of quality, inclusive music and artistic development for audiences of all ages to enjoy. Tickets are available here.

The following night on Jan. 15, 2023, the Richmond Symphony will perform an MLK Community Concert at 3 p.m. at the Perkinson Center for the Arts (11810 Centre St. in Chester). The diverse repertoire features spirituals, hymns and other stirring compositions by Black musicians of the past and present. Brown Ballerinas for Change, a social justice organization formed to increase participation of underrepresented populations in ballet, will perform during the concert. Tickets can be found here.
