Studies show that nearly one third of adults with disabilities report feeling persistent feelings of loneliness and lack of companionship. For many, opportunities to build meaningful relationships or participate in social activities can be limited by a lack of accessible spaces or inclusive programming. This is where Step N Up fills the gap.
Creating a safe space
Step N Up was originally founded in 2010 as a group home for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. However, when regulations and operations for group homes shifted in 2020 due to COVID-19 regulations, the organization recognized a new need.
Today, Step N Up works to create a safe and inclusive space for adults with diverse needs to be free to be themselves. Through nightclub-like parties, participants are able to experience the joys of adulthood without feeling judged.
“We create this safe space for them to dance, to have fun, so they’re able to make friends, interact with people and connect on a more natural and organic basis,” said Jennifer Spraggins, a board member for Step N Up.
Long-term goals
Looking ahead, Step N Up hopes to secure a permanent location to host recreational events and an inclusive nightclub. This space would offer nutritious food, a strong support network and structured programs like career development, fitness activities and social gatherings to help enhance the wellbeing of those it serves.
“These individuals are capable of doing a lot, and when they have the right support, just like any of us, they can excel,” Spraggins said.
Halloween fun
On October 23, 2025, Step N Up will host its Halloween Dance at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will be full of music, dancing, prizes and fun for everyone. The party is free to attend for anyone.
“One of the most rewarding things about our events is looking around the room and seeing everyone laughing and dancing with one another,” Spraggins said, “There really is nothing like it.”
