Healthy Soil, Healthy Trees: Practical Soil Amendment Strategies for Urban Landscapes

Soil amendments have long been used in arboriculture to support tree health, but today’s expanding range of products—from biochar and organic fertilizers to mycorrhiza, seaweed, humic acids, and biostimulants—raises an important question: What actually works?
Dr. Glynn Percival, Senior Arboricultural Researcher for Bartlett Tree Laboratories, will examine the potential benefits and limitations of modern soil amendments, with a focus on improving soil health, supporting root development, and increasing tree resilience to drought, heat, pests, and disease. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of where soil amendments can make a meaningful difference in the longevity of our trees.
This event is free and open to anyone passionate about growing a healthy tree canopy in the Richmond region—including homeowners, landscape professionals, and nonprofit partners. The evening features a mix of structured discussion and casual networking over food, offering time to reconnect with old friends and build new connections. We hope you will join us! Registration is required and will open to the public on September 10 through Event Brite.
