When you think about horses, it’s easy to think about peaceful farms, beautiful pastures and clean stables. However, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an estimated 100,000 horses are being neglected and abused each year across the United States alone.
Willow Woods Equine Sanctuary & Farm was created to protect these vulnerable animals. Founded in Hampton Roads, the nonprofit is a growing sanctuary and advocacy organization dedicated to rescuing at-risk horses, educating the public and building a community of compassionate supporters. Through hands-on care, public outreach and partnerships with like-minded advocates, Willow Woods continues to expand its impact across the region.
We sat down with Michelle Farmer, founder and lifelong equine advocate, to talk about her passion for rescue work and the heartfelt mission driving Willow Woods forward.
What inspired you to start Willow Woods?
I was a volunteer with an organization called The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, which saves horses from going to slaughter into Mexico and Canada for human consumption. It was through this organization that I was inspired to create advocates in Hampton Roads through Willow Woods.
Tell us about your core mission. Why is it important?
The core mission of Willow Woods is to educate the everyday person about horse care, the existence of the slaughter pipeline and auctions, and the traumas that happen to these horses that people have no clue about. These can come from the racing industries, backyard breeding, and not having laws specific to horses.
What is the greatest need for the organization right now?
The greatest need right now is a new roof. Currently, we are refurbishing a 150-year-old barn, where we are rebuilding the walls one at a time. We are about 75% through all the walls, but the roof desperately needs to be replaced.
How can people support Willow Woods?
We have been able to meet and transform so many different people in the Hampton Roads community into advocates of our cause. Our website houses many of the programs that we run, including virtual adoption, horse riding lessons and sponsorship programs.
