Four Virginia-Based Nonprofits Serving the Hispanic/Latino Community

According to the 2022 U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population is the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority, accounting for approximately 19.1% of the total U.S. population. In Virginia, as of the 2020 Decennial Census, Latinos make up 10.6% of the population. Despite their sizeable presence, many in the Hispanic and Latino community face a range of cultural, social and economic barriers.

Fortunately, within the commonwealth there are nonprofit organizations whose mission is to help the Hispanic community in a variety of ways. From advocacy and education to providing essential services, these nonprofits work to elevate this growing community. Here are four Virginia-based nonprofits that address specific needs of Hispanics and Latinos throughout the commonwealth.

The Virginia Hispanic Foundation

Established in 2003, The Virginia Hispanic Foundation works to provide resources, education and a sense of community to empower Hispanics.

The Pasaporte A La Educación program teaches Hispanic students strong leadership skills and pushes participants to seek higher education. Bilingual offerings are available in person or online through the Pasaporte Leadership App, where students can access lessons and presentations and connect with industry professionals from various fields.

“We are committed to empowering our community through education, workforce development and cultural initiatives,” said Lisa Zajur, executive director for The Virginia Hispanic Foundation. “Every day, we see the resilience and dedication of Hispanic families striving for a better future, and it is our privilege to support them. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive Virginia where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

Latinos in Virginia Empowerment Center

LIVE Center began in 2008 with a mission to advance the Latino community across Virginia. In 2018, it homed in on providing vital services for victims of violence, trauma and injustice – after realizing that the Latino community is at a greater risk of not seeking help due to language and cultural barriers.

With two locations in North Chesterfield and Chesapeake, Virginia, the nonprofit offers services that include crisis intervention, licensed counseling and therapy and support groups. In 2021, the organization created the only 24/7 domestic and sexual violence hotline that guarantees bilingual crisis support in Virginia. With volunteers who are bi-culturally trained, the organization has become a safe space for hundreds across the commonwealth.

Sin Barreras (Without Barriers)

This 501(c)3, located in Charlottesville aims to break down barriers for Hispanic or Spanish-speaking immigrants through programs that celebrate diversity, provide immigration support and educational opportunities.

Sin Barreras boasts initiatives like Plaza Comunitaria, in partnership with the Mexican Consulate and Instituto Nacional para la Educación de los Adultos (INEA), which provides free lessons to help Spanish-speaking adults complete their primary or secondary education. Immigration support includes assistance with filling out legal documents and translation services offered in person and remotely.

“The services and programs that we offer at Sin Barreras, are coming straight from the feedback we receive from the community or from our own personal experiences,” said Fanny Smedile, founder of Sin Barreras. “One thing is for sure: this is not only one person’s battle; we have all gone through similar struggles, and it is what keeps our organization grounded and still here after more than 10 years. We understand every person that enters through our doors.”

Latinas Leading Tomorrow

This Arlington-based nonprofit uplifts first-generation, college-bound Latinas through educational programs and mentor-led sessions.

LLT provides Creating Opportunities to Reach Excellence (CORE) afterschool programs in five middle schools and high schools in Virginia. The year-round program is built around academics, cultural identity, leadership development and community service. The organization also offers a weeklong STEM summer program, Latina Labs, where students gain hands-on experience in coding, engineering, biology, science, mathematics and statistics.

By providing strong examples of professional Latinas, the organization hopes to inspire the future generation to reach their full potential.
